Punjab Agricultural University conducted a training camp on World Bee Day for the Progressive Beekeepers Association on May 20, 2024, at the Conference Hall of PAMETI, PAU, Ludhiana. The event was directed by Dr. Tejinder Singh Riar, Additional Director of Communication, with Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Head of the Department of Extension Education, as the Associate Director, and Dr. Jaspal Singh from the Department of Entomology as the Programme Coordinator.

Experts from various departments underscored different aspects of beekeeping and its potential as a profitable business.

Dr. M.S. Bhullar, Director of Extension Education and the chief guest, highlighted the importance of honeybees in maintaining ecological balance and advocated for beekeeping as a subsidiary occupation for farmers.

Dr. Tejinder Singh Riar emphasized the passion of beekeepers and the critical need for preserving bees as they are essential for human survival.

S. Jatinder Singh Sohi, President of PBKA, welcomed the participants and reviewed the club’s activities. Dr. Amit Chaudhary from the Department of Entomology discussed the significance of World Bee Day. At the same time, Dr. Jaspal Singh addressed the issue of the Small Hive Beetle, a new pest in honey bee colonies in India. Dr. Khushdeep Dharni from the School of Business Studies explored strategies for marketing hive products to enhance profitability. Additionally, Dr. Bharathi Mohindru from the Department of Entomology focused on the hygienic behavior of honey bees to reduce brood diseases.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from S. Jagtar Singh, Secretary of PBKA, who also facilitated a Q&A session between the experts and farmers. More than 115 participants attended the programme, and progressive beekeepers were honored for their contributions.
