ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute & Allied Fibers, Barrackpore organised a massive tree plantation drive and mango sapling distribution under Ek Ped Maa ke Naam campaign in association with Kultali Milan Tirtha Society at Kultali, West Bengal, today.

Dr Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF, emphasized the importance of trees considering the natural resource management under climate change scenario. He also highlighted that the fragile ecosystem of Sundarban is very much vulnerable to the natural calamities caused due to climatic changes. In this backdrop the tree plantation drive will create resilience to the agro-ecosystem of Subndarbans, he added. Dr Kar urged the farm community to nurture the plantations and inspire others, especially the younger generation, so that the tree plantation initiative can evolve into a widespread movement in the Sundarbans.

The Director accentuated the importance of trees and other green initiatives taken by ICAR-CRIJAF with respect to natural fibers in sustaining the quality of environment. He reiterated the commitment of the institute in providing technological support and skill development for overall livelihood security of the small and marginal farmers of Sundarban will continue to benefit the farmers of Sundarban.

A total of 1500 mango (cv. Amrapalli and Mallika) saplings were distributed and planted during the programme.

An awareness programme on ‘Ek Ped Maa Ka Naam’ was also organized and attended by more than 1200 farm women and the representatives of press and media.
