Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Hoshiarpur, in collaboration with Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-I, Ludhiana, conducted an enriching vocational training course titled “Protected Cultivation and Nursery Raising of Vegetable Crops” from November 14 to November 22, 2023.
The inaugural day witnessed Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Hoshiarpur, extending a warm welcome to the eager participants. Dr Bons shared insights into KVK’s ongoing initiatives while emphasizing the pivotal role and extensive scope of maintaining healthy vegetable nurseries and adopting protected cultivation techniques to ensure top-notch vegetable production. He inspired attendees to consider this a lucrative avenue for self-employment in agriculture.
Under the expert guidance of Dr Sukhwinder Singh Aulakh, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) at KVK Hoshiarpur and the course coordinator, participants gained comprehensive knowledge on various facets of polyhouse structures, low tunnels, as well as traditional and high-tech nursery raising methodologies. Practical sessions involved the cultivation of tomato seedlings in portrays within KVK’s polyhouse setup. Adding valuable insights, Mr Gurwinder Singh, a progressive farmer, nursery grower, and KVK’s Scientific Advisory Committee member, shared his extensive experience. He offered useful tips on commercial onion nursery production and vegetable cultivation.
The training concluded with an exposure visit to the Centre of Excellence (Vegetables) in Kartarpur on November 22, 2023. Sh Anmoldeep Singh Aulakh, a Vegetable Expert Consultant at the Centre, showcased cutting-edge technologies related to nursery raising and vegetable cultivation, illustrating methods employed in walk-in-tunnels, net houses, and polyhouses. Ms Razan, a micro-irrigation expert, provided detailed explanations on various hydroponics, drip irrigation, fertigation techniques, and automation systems, offering the trainees a comprehensive understanding of modern agricultural practices.
The vocational training proved an educational and practical platform, equipping participants with advanced techniques essential for contemporary vegetable cultivation practices.
