The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bathinda, successfully concluded a five-day Skill Development Training on Pig Farming from 30th December 2024 to 3rd January 2025. A total of 41 trainees, including farmers, farm women, and rural youth from various villages, participated in the programme, aimed at empowering participants with the knowledge and skills to adopt pig farming as a profitable enterprise.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Gurdeep Singh Sidhu, Deputy Director (Training), who emphasized the significance of agriculture and allied occupations in enhancing livelihoods. Dr. Ajitpal Singh Dhaliwal, Course Coordinator and Professor (Animal Science), delivered detailed lectures on essential aspects of pig farming, including feeding, breeding, vaccination, disease control, and healthcare.
Dr. G.S. Dhillon, Professor of Extension Education, encouraged participants to form Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to strengthen collective efforts and market access. Meanwhile, Dr. G.K. Dhillon, Food Technologist at the Regional Research Station, Bathinda, highlighted the role of processing in pig farming to enhance farm income.
The programme concluded with a call to action for participants to adopt pig farming as an enterprise, which not only supplements family income but also provides healthy and nutritious food. Special emphasis was placed on improving the health and economic status of farming families, particularly in rural areas, through sustainable pig farming practices.
