To mark the International Year of Camelids 2024, declared by the United Nations, ICAR-National Research Centre on Camel Bikaner celebrated ‘World Camel Day today.
The Chief Guest, Dr. A. Sahoo, Director, ICAR-National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Bengaluru, urged the need for changes in law enacted on camel conservation by Rajasthan state to make it more useful for the livelihood of the owners. He highlighted the medicinal properties present in camel milk; and channelize systematic collection, transport and processing of milk with NGOs in a lead role to promote camel dairy entrepreneurship.
Special guest Dr. Nitin Goyal, Director, Rajasthan State Archives, Bikaner, highlighted the importance of camels from a historical perspective. He spoke about the camel as a symbol of rural culture in the desert life was not possible without the camel.
Dr. R.K. Sawal, Director, ICAR-NRCC, emphasised that a camel is a special animal of arid zones and highlands. He urged highlighting its incomparable contribution to the rural economy of desert dwellers during past and present eras of modernity and the development of human civilization. Dr. Sawal said that the centre is moving forward with a practical scientific approach to improve livelihood opportunities for camel owners in the desert ecology to maximize the use of its different products.
More than 500 camel breeders from Mount Abu, Sirohi, women farmers and entrepreneurs from nearby villages of Deshnok, and Gangasagar, camel cart owners, common people, Scientists and centre staff of ICAR Institutes from Bikaner district participated in the programme.
