18th – 19th November 2024, Ganderbal
A 2-day national workshop on conservation of Indigenous fishes of Jammu & Kashmir in changing climate Scenario scheduled from 18th-19th November 2024 was inaugurated at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir. The workshop was organised jointly by ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow and Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-Kashmir, aiming to address the challenges posed by climate change to the aquatic genetic resources of hilly regions of India especially Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Guest, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K stressed the significance of fish production in the region and urged young researchers to be ready to accept the new challenges in the changing climatic conditions.
Dr U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, highlighted various strategies for ensuring sustainable fisheries development in Coldwater regions.
Dr B.B. Jana, Founder Director, ICEE, Kalyani; Mrs Santana Jana, and Dr. Haroon Rashid Naik, Director, Research, SKUAST-K, also graced the occasion.
The workshop included 6 technical themes, with 12 lead, 56 oral and 20 poster presentations on various aspects of climate change, indigenous germplasm, sustainable fisheries management & biodiversity conservation. During the inauguration, several books authored by the Faculty of Fisheries and a poster on hill stream loaches prepared by ICAR-NBFGR were released.
On this occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between ICAR-NBFGR and the Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST, Kashmir, to promote research and academic collaboration for the growth of hill stream fisheries.
The programme was attended by over 200 researchers/faculty members as well as eminent researchers.
