The ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland, celebrated its 37th Foundation Day today with enthusiasm and participation from key dignitaries.

Shri Gabriel D. Wangsu, Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, Dairy Development, Fisheries, Food & Civil Supplies, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, graced the event as Chief Guest. Dr. Dheer Singh, Director, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, was the Special Guest, while Shri Hage Tari, Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development (AHV&DD), Government of Arunachal Pradesh, attended as Guest of Honor alongside Dr. Rajan Sharma, Joint Director (Research), ICAR-NDRI.

Shri Wangsu praised Mithun as an environmental quality indicator, stressing the need for scientific practices such as semi-intensive rearing to revitalize the Mithun sector. He also called for the development of Mithun meat adulteration detection kits for quality control.

The Minister advocated for the establishment of Mithun Research and Training Facilities in Arunachal Pradesh.

The interactive session chaired by Shri Wangsu focused on developing the Mithun sector in Arunachal Pradesh, leading to the release of a policy paper titled “Roadmap for the Development of Mithun Sector in Arunachal Pradesh”.

Dr. Dheer Singh delivered a lecture on the development of the dairy sector in Northeast India, with a special focus on Mithun.

Dr Girish Patil, S., Director, ICAR-NRC Mithun highlighted the recent achievements and activities for the Institute.

A regional workshop on the “Development of the Dairy Sector in Northeast India with Special Reference to Mithun (Bos frontalis)” was organized as part of the event, with 50 dairy farmers from Kohima and Dimapur participating. Input materials to promote dairy farming were distributed, with support from the NEH Fund of ICAR-NDRI, Karnal.

During the event, the Nagami Mithun breed registration was submitted, m-Anitra mobile app, and Mithun stress studies were launched.

Staff members were recognized with appreciation certificates, and several informative leaflets for farmers were released

Dr. D. Longri, Director, AHV, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, representatives from CPWD, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland, and faculty from CVSc, Jalukie, and Nagaland University’s School of Agricultural Sciences also participated in the event.

The event marked a significant step in advancing the dairy sector in Northeast India, with a focus on Mithun.
