The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar conducted All India State Animal Husbandry Directors Interface Meet-2023 with 28 states and 6 Union territories on 23rd September, 2023.
The inaugural session was graced by Chief Guest Shri Parshottam Rupala Ji, Honorable Union Cabinet Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, GoI and chaired by Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, DADH&F and Dr. Triveni Dutt, Director, ICAR- IVRI.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Parshottam Rupala Ji, Honorable Union Cabinet Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, GoI has appreciated the effort of organizing this event which is 1st of its kind in the country. He lauded the sincere efforts of scientist for developing vaccine & diagnostics to fulfill the national demand. He urged that in the line of appreciable work done by IVRI, the State departments should also put serious effort to start the research activities in collaboration with state universities to meet the specific needs of the states.
He further suggested that similar to human birth –death register, there is need to prepare the animal register for birth and death account of livestock. Further, the scientific way of disposal of dead carcass may also be worked out. He urged the State Animal Husbandry Directors to implement capacity building programme in the states for various stakeholder to equip them with latest technologies to tackle the future challenges. He further urged that there is need work as one family to serve the farming community effectively and federal structure of India provides us this opportunity.
Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Commissioner, DHAD&F stressed that IVRI should do more focused research to tackle AMR which is expect to caused heavy toll in coming days and come out with alternative ethno-botanical based therapies to reduce the antibiotic use. The new vaccine development platform should be also be explored along with research of parasitic control. He lauded that IVRI may suggest action plan for tackling the issue of free roaming animals.
Various directors discussed problems in their states related to animal husbandry practice, disease diagnosis and capacity building of their veterinarians. They further suggested various researchable issues to be undertaken based on their need like Adaptability of elite dairy animals in Jammu Division, ready to use kit for disease diagnosis/pregnancy diagnosis, development of food hygiene laboratory, development of indigenous vaccines for new and emerging livestock diseases, genetic upgradation of non-descript cattle for more production, DNA testing lab for genomic selection and early bull selection for breeding, genomic sequencing of circulating sylvatic rabies and emerging viral diseases, issues on African Swine Fever-Diagnosis and development of viable vaccine, production of combined vaccine for FMD, HS & BQ along with Brucella, ethno-veterinary medicine practices pertaining to reproductive management of all animal, pheromone based products for vector control, Bovine Animal Biometrics for traceability, food safety and disease control, ‘Sustained release / Depot’ – FMD vaccine that can provide immunity for longer periods (beyond 6 months), development of electronic dongle (device) that can be plugged to smart phones to read passive RFID tags etc.
