A training programme on ‘Nutrient Management in organic production of fruits and vegetables’ was organized in Champapedi village of Ranpur block of Nayagarh district of Odisha on 10 June 2024. The training was organized to enhance the knowledge of farm women on organic nutrient management practices to enhance the soil fertility through green manuring, vermicomposting and application of Natural soil-fertility enhancer- Jeevamrut. The training also included detailed instructions on preparing other natural fertility enhancers, including Ghanajeevamrut, Amritpani, and  At the commencement of the training, the participants were sensitized to the importance of organic farming in reducing environmental pollution, enriching the soil’s microbial population, and sustaining crop production.

The detrimental effects of using imbalanced rates of inorganic fertilizers on soil fertility and productivity were also emphasized, aiming to shift the participants towards more sustainable farming practices. The women’s groups were educated on the importance of a healthy diet, emphasizing the benefits of incorporating organically grown fruits and vegetables into their daily nutrition. The training provided in-depth insights into organic nutrient management practices, highlighting the use of biofertilizers such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, mycorrhiza, potash-solubilizing bacteria, and phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria. Furthermore, the session covered advanced technologies like seaweed extract, biozymes, and fish emulsions, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing crop growth and productivity. Additionally, the program incorporated interactive sessions, allowing participants to clear their query in preparing and applying these organic fertilizers. The training also included discussions on the economic benefits of organic farming, showcasing successful case studies of organic farms and their impact on local communities. This training was attended by 50 farm women from Champapedi village and was part of the Institute project titled “Development of Horticulture (Fruits)-based Organic Farming Model for Entrepreneurship and Strengthening Self-Reliance and of Farm Women.” The training was successfully coordinated by Dr. Ankita Sahu, Scientist and Dr. L.P. Sahoo, Sr. Scientist of ICAR-CIWA. The programme concluded with a feedback session, where the farm women expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to implementing the organic practices learned, marking a significant step towards sustainable agriculture in the region.
