ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute conducted a 7-day capacity building programme on ‘Inland Fisheries Management’ during 14-20 May 2024, for the fish farmers of Madhepura district of Bihar. 30 fish farmers along with one fisheries development officer attended the training program. The training program was sponsored by Directorate of Fisheries, Govt of Bihar.

In his inaugural address, Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI stressed the need for fishers to learn about inland fisheries management to secure a sustainable livelihood. He urged fishers to use their available resources to maximize outputs and productivity. He also emphasised that each trainee should become a master trainer and train five to seven fishers of his neighborhood.

The week-long training programme covered inland fisheries, and fish farming including pond management, induced breeding, composite fish farming, ornamental fisheries, enclosure culture, fish health management, and a general overview of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Participants were also introduced to the Institute’s Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental hatchery units, and fish feed mill. As part of the field visit of the trainees, local visit of ICAR-CIFA Kalyani Fish Farms, Halishahar Fish Farm, wastewater culture at East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), Ornamental fish markets, and other locations was organised.

The participants received their training certificate from Dr B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI after completion of training on 20 May 2024. Dr. Das congratulated all the participants on their successful training.

Training Programme was coordinated by Mr. Ganesh Chandra and Ms. Anjana Ekka with assistance from Shri Sujit Chowdhury, Dr. Avishek Saha, Shri Manabendra Roy and Shri Kaushik Saha.
