Hands on Training on ‘DNA Sequencing Using Ion Torrent NGS Platform and Data Analysis under Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP)’ was organized by the Central NGS Facility, ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education from 4th – 11th December 2024 at Mumbai. The Course Director of the training was Dr. Aparna Chaudhari, In-Charge, CIFE NGS Facility, and Dr. A. Pavan Kumar and Dr. Kiran D. Rasal were the Coordinators. Ten students (4 women and 6 men) from various institutes like CSIR- Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu; Mumbai Veterinary College, K.N.P college of Veterinary Science, Shirval, and ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai participated in this program. A paid training programme on the same topic that was conducted parallelly with 10 participants (7 women and 3 men) from ICAR institutes and traditional universities such as ICAR-NRCP, ICAR-IISR, ICAR-NBAIM, ICAR-CIFE, Thakur College of Science and Commerce, K. C. College – HSNC University, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, and private organization such as Agilus Diagnostics Pvt Ltd.

The inaugural function on 4th December, was chaired by Dr. N. P. Sahu, Joint Director, ICAR-CIFE (Deemed University) who highlighted the importance of genomics research in present times, and how it has evolved over the years leading to the establishment of the Central NGS Facility at CIFE which can be used by scientists and students from varied backgrounds to generate scientific data. He hoped that the participants will initiate research which would utilize this facility. Dr. Aparna Chaudhari welcomed guests from Thermo Fisher Scientific, Mr. Pravin Nilawe and Ms. Amanda Gomes, and thanked them and their team for their help with the training. The training included lectures and practical sessions on sample and library preparation, NGS workflow, operation, and data analysis. Open bioinformatics tools for analysis of metagenome, mitogenome and transcriptome data were demonstrated. More emphasis was given to hands-on practical sessions. A training manual was distributed. Overall, the trainees rated the training ‘excellent’ In the valedictory function, held on 11th December 2024, certificates were distributed by the Joint Director, Dr. N. P. Sahu. He congratulated the Course Director and team for a well-designed and well-conducted training. He was pleased to see good participation from across the country. He encouraged all the participating scientists, assistant professors and students to maintain this linkage and make use of the facility.
