ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organised one Workshop-cum-training programme on Aquarium maintenance and care for the school teachers, extension officials and hobbyists at ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati on 15.03.2024 under NEH scheme. The event was organised to promote aquarium science education programmes amongst schools, extension officials and hobbyists on aquarium maintenance and care. The event was attended by more than sixty five participants including Scientists, technical officers, extension officials, hobbyists, students and teachers of Kamrup (M) of Assam.

At the backdrop of the event, Dr Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Director of ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar suggested for promoting science education programmes in different schools of Assam through supply of the technology of Aquarium maintenance & care. While inaugurating the event Shri G. S. Das, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Assam suggested for adoption of ICAR-CIFA technologies for the overall development of fisheries in Assam. During inauguration of the programme, Dr Saroj Kumar Swain, Former Director of ICAR-CIFA narrated the huge scope and prospects of aquarium keeping in school education programmes. Dr S Adhikari, Principal Scientist and Chairman of NEH programmes of ICAR-CIFA highlighted the activities including aquarium keeping undertaken by ICAR-CIFA for development of North East Region. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati highlighted the benefits of keeping indigenous ornamental fishes. Dr. Dhrubajyoti Sharma, MD, FISHFED, Govt. of Assam briefed about the history of keeping of ornamental fishes in Assam.

Dr C K Misra, Principal Scientist and Co-coordinator of NEH programs of ICAR-CIFA welcomed all the participants and briefed the objectives of the event. In the event twenty different schools in and around Guwahati including fourteen numbers of higher secondary schools of Assam, five numbers of Kendriay Vidyalaya and one number of Aquaculture Field School managed by the NGO, Kalong Kapil were distributed aquaria with all supporting tables, top cover, filter and all accessories including lightings, aeration, decorative objects etc. The event was coordinated by Dr C K Misra, Principal Scientist of ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar and Dr. S. C. S. Das, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati.
