Fish farmers play a crucial role in increasing the fish production. Fish farmers day is celebrated to commemorate the first breeding achievement of Dr Hiralal Choudhary in Carps in July 10 1956.
ICAR CIBA and Fish for All Research and Training Centre of MSSRF Poompuhar jointly celebrated the same on 10 th November 2024 at Mathamppatinam village in Mayiladhuthurai district of Tamil Nadu.
About 80 fishermen and fishers including women participated in the event. Dr M Kumaran Principal Scientist Social Sciences Division of ICAR CIBA briefed about the significance of National Fish Farmers Day and the role of fish farmers in Indian economy. Dr R Subburaj Chief Technical Officer ICAR CIBA highlighted on technical aspects of nursery rearing of Asian Seabass ( Lates calcarifer). Dr Vel Vizhi Director Fish for All Research and Training Centre Poompuhar emphasized on importance of cohesiveness in group farming

At Kakdwip Research Centre, West Bengal a total of 50 Brackishwater aquaculture farmers from South 24 Parganas district participated. Dr. Debasis De, Head, Kakdwip Research Centre welcomed the gathering and Prof. (Dr.) H. Shivananda Murthy, Chair Professor and Dean of Fisheries College at Neotia University, Kolkata and Chief Guest of the event emphasized the crucial role of cutting-edge technologies like Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS), Aquaponics, and Biofloc techniques in shaping a sustainable future for fish farming. A Scientist-Farmer interaction was also conducted wherein farmers raised their queries on various aspects of farming and problems faced by them. Dr Sanjoy Das proposed the Vote of Thanks.
