The PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Faridkot organized a five-day training program on “Value Addition to Horticultural Crops” from 8-12 July in which 24 girls and farm women from villages Ghugiana, Jalaleana, Chuga Singh Nagar, Beguwala, Dallewala and Faridkot urban and rural participated. The training was held under the aegis of Directorate of Extension education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.

At the inaugural session, Dr Karmjeet Kaur, Assistant Professor (Home Science), interacted with the farm women and encouraged them to preserve fruits and vegetables as these are less expensive during glut period and generally wasted due to unavailability of proper storage and processing industry. She also urged the participants to opt for their respective venture to establish themselves as entrepreneurs. Besides, she shared her views on the nutritional importance of fruits and vegetables in the daily diet and discussed different methods of preservation to increase the shelf life of seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Dr Karmjeet Kaur and Ms Navdeep Kaur Sandhu gave demonstrations on the preparation of mix fruit jam, tomato chutney, mango chutney, mango pickle, ghia chutney, tomato ketchup, garlic picklerose sharbat and mango squash. Participants showed great interest in the training program and prepared value added products of fruits and vegetables at their places for their families.
