The Punjab Chapter of Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers organized an interactive talk on the “Widening Scope of Agricultural Engineers for Sustaining the Agriculture” at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The talk was delivered by Dr SN Jha, President, Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers and Deputy Director General (Agricultural Engineering), Indian Council Agricultural Research (ICAR). Dr Jha is a world renowned scientist, who has been bestowed with several awards and recognitions including Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award.
During interactive session, Dr Jha stressed upon the need for the formation of the Directorate of Agricultural Engineering at the block level in every state to reduce losses and boost farmers’ income. He observed that Agricultural Engineers by training were better equipped to handle agriculture machinery, agricultural produce processing and water management systems. This would generate employment for the B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering) graduates as well as facilitate and equip the farmers with new and innovative technologies, he said. “Such a directorate will help to better manage the natural resources and accelerate the agricultural mechanization for enhancing food and income security,” he added.
Lauding the informative talk by the key speaker, Dr HS Sidhu, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering, said: “Agriculture engineers can play a pivotal role in the adoption of conservation agriculture. This may result in carbon neutral economy by 2050.” He also apprised the house of the role of agricultural engineers in agriculture.
Earlier, Dr Rakesh Sharda, Head, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, highlighted the accomplishments of Dr Jha. Later, he proposed a vote of thanks.
