Why this Course?
Shrimp farming in India is a vibrant, fast growing and dynamic industry nurturing and sustaining the livelihoods of more than a million people, aiding the development of the ancillary aqua seed, feed, logistics, processing, and export industries, and steadily expanding the nutrition basket of consumers in both domestic and global markets. The sector generates an annual export revenue of about ₹ 43,000 crores and provides nearly one million tons of quality seafood for human consumption. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and West Bengal are the major shrimp producing States followed by Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. Inland saline aquaculture is also gaining momentum in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. With only 16% of the available area under culture, it has immense growth potential. Currently, Indian shrimp farming faces a number of challenges, especially in terms of market uncertainty and price fluctuations, disease outbreaks, and extreme climate events. Insurance is one of the ways to shield against the risks and protect shrimp farmers’ income and livelihoods. Similar to agricultural crop insurance, shrimp crop insurance is still evolving with innovative insurance products being launched in the market. ICAR-CIBA estimated an insurance premium market of Rs. 1000/- crores. Union government is also encouraging shrimp growers to insure their crop by subsidizing the premium up to 40%. However, the success of any insurance program requires availability of human resource with know-how of the insurance products, loss assessment, claim settlement as well as basic knowledge about shrimp farming practices and associated risks. There is a dearth of such expertise at present in India. Realizing this gap, ICAR-CIBA and ICAR-CIFE have jointly developed a customized 5 days Certificate Course to train a cadre of people from among the series professionals, development agencies, banking and insurance executives, marketing executives, technical consultants, and even fresh graduates seeking opportunities in shrimp industry to provide such support services. This cadre will become the crucial linkage between the shrimp growers and the insurance companies. This is already a felt need of the insurance industry venturing into shrimp crop insurance.
