To enhance the livelihood through income generation by having a self-employment activity to women. ICAR-NAARM organized five days Skill Development training programme on “Backyard Poultry Management” under SCSP in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra Mamnoor, which is under PV Narasimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University for SC women from 17-21st December 2024. Forty Scheduled Caste women farmers represented from Ambedkar Nagar village, Warangal District, Telangana participated in the programme. The women participated actively in all sessions of the program and were educated on various aspects of backyard poultry rearing. The participants gained both theoretical & practical experience on Poultry Management in the backyards, Diseases commonly observed in Poultry and their management.

Dr.Ch.Srinivasa Rao Director, ICAR-NAARM interacted with the farmers regarding the training programme and stated that introducing improved backyard poultry varieties, along with scientific skill development in feeding, housing, and disease prevention and management, will increase the income and living standards of rural farmers. He specifically urged women farmers to consider backyard poultry as a viable tool for generating employment alongside traditional agriculture.

Dr.M.Balakrishnan, Principal Scientist and Chairman SCSP, NAARM inaugurated the programme and briefed the participants about SC Sub plan programme. He encouraged farmers to take full advantage of such skill development programs. He emphasized that rearing backyard poultry is crucial for the economic development of women farmers, as these birds adapt well to village environments and can provide them with greater profits. Dr N. Rajanna, Professor & Head KVK, Warangal in his address highlighted that backyard poultry rearing requires minimal investment and can be easily managed in their backyards. He highlighted that it not only provides additional income but also enhances food security. He stressed that the per capita egg consumption is 180 eggs per year, while the average consumption is only 104 eggs. He pointed out that Telangana requires approximately three crore eggs daily, suggesting that this deficit could be addressed by increasing egg production through backyard poultry.

As part of the training curriculum, trainees were taken on an exposure visit to Vanaraja Multiplication Farm near to Warangal and Poultry research station, PVNRTVU and NAARM Rajendranagar, Hyderabad and interact with the scientist. In the valedictory session, to start the Backyard Poultry Farming by the trainees to each trainee 10 Rajashree chicks (two months old), feed, water, and feeder distributed.

Earlier, Dr.Shashank, SMS delivered the welcome address. The meeting ended with the vote of thanks by Dr.Saikiran, SMS, KVK Warangal. The programme was coordinated by Dr N. Rajanna, Professor & Head KVK , Warangal.
