In continuation to the introduction of the concept of LiFE at COP 26 at Galsgow, and to scale up the vision of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for environment), as part of action plan, a LiFE activity was organized on Composting (waste to wealth) by ICAR-IIOR on 10.05.2024 at National Institute of Plant Health Management, Hyderabad.
Crop and lawn waste and plant remains in the field have been threshed and cleaned. Global crop waste availability is roughly estimated to be 4 billion tonnes per anum, with cereals accounting for 74 % and the rest legumes, oil crops, sugar crops and tubers etc. India has a potential of about 550 million tonnes per annum which is a big treasure of primary, secondary and micronutrients. As a result, crop waste management is the first and most vital
subject for achieving LiFE goals. It is this context production of organic manure in the form of vermicompost obtained from the earthworm is one way to overcome the disposal of wastes. The production of compost from any organic waste (agriculture and homestead) using earthworms is called vermicomposting. Earthworms feeds the organic waste materials and passes it through their digestive system (digested by microbes present in the guts of worms) and gives out in a granular form (cocoons) which is known as vermicompost. It’s made from mix of dung, crop residues and kitchen wastes along with earthworms are rich in terms of nutrient availability compared to farm yard manure (FYM) which is from mere decomposition of dung.
ICAR-IIOR organized an awareness-cum-training demo on vermicompost production technology at NIPHM, Hyderabad wherein farm technical staff and scientists participated in the event.
