Dr Aquil Ahmad, Chairperson, Department of Philosophy, Aligarh Muslim University delivered an invited lecture at the international conference on “Reflections on Hundred Years of Philosophy in India”, organized by the Department of Philosophy, University of Delhi.
Speaking on “Indian Perspective on Multiculturalism: A Reflection”, Dr Ahmad delineated the multiculturalism engrained in Indian ethos and manifested in the Vedic and Upanishadic traditions.
“In comparison to the Western model of multiculturalism, the Indian model has a distinctive feature of Vasudeva Kutumbkam, Sarva-Dharma Sambhava and syncretism,” stated Prof Aquil, adding that a ‘multicultural consciousness’ and ‘dialogue between civilizations’ need to be developed through academic and societal means to strengthen the spirit of multiculturalism in India.
