The Department of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), in collaboration with the Department of Soil Science and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Ludhiana organized an awareness training camp on “Soil and Water Testing” at village Salempur, district Ludhiana. Nearly 50 farmers participated in the training programme, held under the aegis of Dean, College of Agriculture, PAU, and facilitated by the ICSSR funded project “Waste to Resource: Treated Wastewater Irrigation Management System for Sustainable Agriculture Under One Health Approach in Punjab.”
Dr Sumita Chandel, Soil Chemist, discussed the project’s objectives and highlighted the benefits of using treated wastewater for crop production along with precautions to be taken care before its use. She emphasized the significance of soil and water testing and provided a demonstration on the correct procedure for collecting soil and water samples.
Dr Jasvir Singh Gill, Agronomist, apprised the farmers of different weed management practices to be used for effective weed management in wheat under variable paddy residue management scenario.
Dr Lakhwinder Kaur, Principal Investigator of the project, asked the farmers to adopt subsidiary occupations along with agriculture to enhance income and mitigate the effects of water stress in Punjab. She also advised them to adopt crop diversification and discussed various PAU Kisan Apps, digital newspaper Kheti Sandesh, enrollment for PAU Kisan Club and subscription to PAU Magazine.
Dr Amit Sharma, Assistant Professor, Animal Nutrition, emphasized the importance of water quality and feed quality in ensuring high-quality milk production in dairy animals. He explained that clean, uncontaminated water was crucial not only for maintaining animal health but also for optimizing milk yield and quality. Additionally, he stressed the vital role of balanced and nutritious feed in sustaining the overall health and productivity of livestock.
Dr Sherjit Singh Mand, Agriculture Officer, proposed a vote of thanks and shared various schemes of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. He also encouraged the farmers to take advantage of the services and resources offered by PAU and their department.
