To make farmers aware about paddy stubble management, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, District Level Extension Institution of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, organized field exhibitions on direct sowing of wheat in paddy stubble using Happy Seeder and Smart Seeder machines in the fields of progressive farmers, S. Onkar Singh and S. Baljit Singh in the adopted village Thinda of Mahilpur block of Hoshiarpur district. This year, Thinda village has been adopted under stubble management by Krishi Vigyan Kendra and various activities like awareness camps, training camps and exhibitions are being organized under this.
Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur said that Smart Seeder and Happy Seeder machines are capable of direct sowing of wheat without burning the stubble. These machines leave the stubble on the surface of the land as mulch. The Happy Seeder machine runs on a 50 horsepower tractor and sows about 6-8 acres of land in a day. He said that the Smart Seeder machine is a combination of Happy Seeder and Super Seeder. Dr. Ajaib also informed that the Smart Seeder mixes about 15 to 20 percent of the stubble with the soil and leaves the seed in the soil up to 1 inch, due to which the possibility of wheat seeds falling on the stubble is reduced and the seeds germinate evenly. The Smart Seeder machine sows wheat in one acre of land in one hour with 5.5 liters of diesel.
S. Direct sowing of wheat with Happy Seeder technology was started by Onkar Singh in the year 2017 and since then he has been continuously sowing wheat with this machine. During the year 2023-24, he had directly sown wheat on 13 and 10 acres of area respectively with Happy Seeder and Smart Seeder provided by Krishi Vigyan Kendra. S. Baljit Singh is doing direct sowing of wheat with Smart Seeder machine for the first time on 8 acres of area this year. These farmers are satisfied with the performance of these machines.
