ICAR-Central Sheep & Wool Research Institute organised a farmers-scientists interactive meet as well as distribution of elite Malpura rams to the registered farmers of the Malpura sheep project under Network Project on Sheep Improvement (NWPSI) at ICAR-CSWRI, today.
Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science) ICAR, interacted with the farmers, especially women farmers associated with the Malpura sheep project.
Dr Arun Kumar Tomar, Director, ICAR-CSWRI, stated that the Malpura breed improvement programme is being implemented on farmers’ fields, with yearling growth performance exceeding 60% since its inception in 1975.
Approximately 18 registered farmers from seven villages in the project area benefited from the tracksuits, while three farmers received one elite Malpura ram each to enhance the genetics of their sheep. The project is being carried out at both the Institute farm and the farmers’ fields using a participatory approach. Registered farmers are regularly provided with genetically improved rams and receive support for health and other management interventions.
