The Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Directorate of Extension Education, conducted a three-day ‘Scientific Beekeeping Training’ course at Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Cantonment at Baddowal, Ludhiana. A total 32 trainees from ITBP, Baddowal; CISF; Amritsar and CISF, Kapurthala participated in this training.

Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, while addressing the trainees, said that the University was organizing beekeeping trainings at PAU, Ludhiana; district level Krishi Vigyan Kedras as well as in villages. Appreciating the contribution of defense personnel to the country, he stated that such beekeeping trainings would help in establishing beekeeping units in ITBP, CISF, etc. and in adoption of this ecofriendly occupation to earn livelihood. He also shared vital details about various other trainings, being organized by PAU for entrepreneurship development.

Dr Manmeet Brar Bhullar, Head, Department of Entomology, informed that the department was instrumental in conducting various training programmes in the field of agricultural entomology and that beekeeping was one of the important aspects among these trainings. She stated that this programme would help trainees in understanding the scientific beekeeping principles. She also emphasized the need for production of good quality honey and preferring non-chemical methods for the management of bee diseases and pests.

The Deputy Commandant GD, Mr Naresh Kumar Saini from ITBP, Baddowal, appreciated the efforts made by the PAU to impart such trainings and encouraged the trainees to achieve success in beekeeping. Besides, he highlighted the commendable contributions of ITBP to various peace time operations focusing on the welfare of the civilians.

Dr Ritu Sharma, Second in Command/CVO, ITBP, Baddowal, while coordinating the training programme, expressed gratitude to PAU, Ludhiana and Commandant 26 bn, Mr Saurabh Dubey, ITBP, Baddowal for conducting this training.

Dr Jaspal Singh, Director of the Course, said that the present course was the third of its type, organized exclusively for the defense personnel. This programme was endeavored at establishing beekeeping units at defense premises and providing livelihood opportunity to the defense personnel after attaining the age of superannuation, he observed. These trained personnel may act as trainers in further disseminating vital scientific knowledge on beekeeping to their fellows, he added.

Drs Amit Choudhary and Bharathi Mohindru were the Technical Coordinators of the course and developed this programme keeping in view the needs of the trainees.
