The Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Moga organized a Field Day focused on Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) in the village of Kokri Buttar, District Moga on August 20, 2024.

The event was held in the fields of Dr. Kuldeep Singh, a Retired Agriculture Officer, and saw the participation of 62 farmers and farm women.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Manpreet Jaidka, Assistant Professor of Agronomy, who welcomed the attendees and outlined the objectives of the Field Day. The discussions primarily focused on the significance of direct seeding of rice for conserving natural resources, enhancing soil health, and promoting economically viable crop production.

Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Assistant Professor of Plant Protection, delivered an interactive lecture on the management of insect pests and diseases in paddy and basmati crops.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor of PFE, highlighted the importance of food processing, packaging, and marketing to maintain high profitability within crop production systems.

Dr. Amandeep Singh Brar, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Moga, addressed the farmers on the mandate of Krishi Vigyan Kendras and their critical role in promoting eco-friendly crop production technologies, such as direct seeding of rice and crop residue management. He also provided practical advice on key field operations, including the foliar spray of potassium nitrate, irrigation scheduling in paddy crops, and seed production for the next season.

During the Field Day, Dr. Kuldeep Singh shared his success story of adopting the direct seeding of rice, while Sh. Karnail Singh from the village of Daudhar, who has been using the DSR technique for the past 12 years, shared his experiences and offered practical tips on successfully implementing the technique.

The event concluded with an interaction session, where participating farmers engaged with the experts and discussed their experiences. Additionally, literature on direct seeding of rice, crop residue management, and stunting disease in paddy was distributed among the farmers.

Dr. Manpreet Jaidka extended her gratitude to all participants for their active involvement in the Field Day.
