The Regional Research Centre of ICAR Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bengaluru organized a one-day workshop on ‘Indigenous fishes of Peninsular India: present status and future prospects’ at Bangalore on 20th July 2024, in association with Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka and Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) to deliberate upon reviving indigenous freshwater fishes of peninsular India. The programme was presided by Dr Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Director, ICAR-CIFA. Shri Dineshkumar Kaller, Director, Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka and Dr A.M. Ramesh, CEO, KSTA, Bengaluru were the guests of honour. Shri Kaller in his address expressed the urgent need to revive the native species by conservation activities and assured all the needed support from the Dept of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka for propagation and conservation of peninsular carps. He also informed the house that the department is in the process of establishing a hatchery for the State fish of Karnataka, Barbodes carnaticus at Gorur, Hassan District, for large scale seed production and revival of the stock in the Cauvery River belt and requested technical support from ICAR-CIFA in this regard. Dr P. K. Sahoo stressed that there should be no boundaries as far as science is concerned and called upon all stakeholders of scientific research to work together for reviving the native fish stock in the natural water bodies to their past glory and assured the required scientific support from ICAR-CIFA for this. He underscored the need for developing a roadmap aimed at conservation and propagation of native fish stocks in the region and suggested that Department of Fisheries to join hands with research Institutes for achieving the objectives. As a token of support of ICAR-CIFA to Dept of Fisheries in promoting riverine stock of carnatic carp, the state fish of Karnataka, fingerlings of the fish raised by the institute was handed over by Dr PK Sahoo to Shri Dineshkumar Earlier, Dr Hemaprasanth, Scientist incharge of ICAR-CIFA RRC, Bengaluru briefly described the seed production technology developed by ICAR-CIFA for five species of peninsular carps (Barbodes carnaticus, Hypselobarbus pulchellus, H. kolus, Labeo kontius and Tor khudree). Dr M.R. Raghunath, Principal Scientist (Retd), ICAR-CIFA and Dr N. Sridhar, Principal Scientist (Retd),ICAR-CIFA, presented the research and development on peninsular carps undertaken at ICAR-CIFA that has potential for rejuvenation of native fish stock, besides giving boost to aquaculture activity in the State. Dr M.A. Ramesh spoke about role of KSTA in dissemination of science and technology to the stakeholders and need for focused study on native fish species for better understanding and bringing the potential species to the main stream aquaculture. More than 50 scientific staff of ICAR-CIFRI, KSTA and officials of the Dept of fisheries, Karnataka participated in the workshop.
