A five-day training course on “Beekeeping,” conducted jointly by the Skill Development Centre and the Department of Entomology, concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The course, organized under the supervision of Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, was attended by 40 farmers and farm women.
Meanwhile, a cluster of 25 farmers from New Delhi also visited PAU to gather understanding of the latest agriculture based technologies.
“The training course was held to enable farmers and rural women learn advanced beekeeping technologies, diversify their agriculture related subsidiary enterprise (beekeeping) and earn monetary benefits,” said Dr Rupinder Kaur, Associate Director (Skill Development).
Dr Prerna Kapila highlighted the importance of beekeeping which has proved to be of immense benefit for the farmers in terms of occupation and economics.
Experts Dr Jaspal Singh, Dr Amit Chaudhary, Dr Bharti Mahendru, Dr Kaushik Mandal from PAU; and Dr Sangeet Ranguwal, Deputy Director (Agriculture),Ludhiana, demonstrated beekeeping techniques.
Dr SS Walia, Director, School of Organic Farming; Dr Shivani Sharma, Mycologist; Dr Jaspal Singh, Principal Entomologist; and Dr Arshdeep Singh, food science expert explained organic cultivation of wheat, rice, and other crops; integrated farming system; mushroom cultivation; beekeeping as an enterprise; and incubational facilities available at Food Industry Business Incubation Centre, PAU.
Extension Scientist Dr Lavleesh Garg proposed a vote of thanks and apprised the delegation of research priorities -development of less water gulping and climate resilient crop varieties, stubble management, natural resource conservation, and income enhancement of farmers.
