“Honey, which is well-known for its biological, physiological and pharmacological activities, is a highly nutritional food for all the age groups,” observed Dr Sonika Sharma, a food and nutrition expert, at the monthly training camp of the Progressive Beekeepers Association (PBKA), held at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. As many as 28 beekeepers attended the camp that was held under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education.
“Honey is a sweetener rich in bioactive substances,” she said, while detailing its active components including glucose, fructose, flavonoid, polyphenols, and organic acids that played a vital role in its quality. Dr Sharma underlined the inclusion of honey in daily diet for adding flavours, soothing digestive system and throat, and healthy life.
Dr Jaspal Singh, Principal Entomologist, while explaining the care of honey bees in winter season, stressed upon adopting PAU recommendations for productivity enhancement. He also urged the beekeepers to promote adoption of beekeeping among fellow farmers for it was fast emerging as a productive enterprise.
Dr Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Extension Education, highlighted the importance of beekeeping as a lucrative and sustainable subsidiary occupation. Beekeepers were enjoying the fiscal and nutritional benefits from beekeeping, he added.
Sardar Jagtar Singh, Secretary of PBKA, welcomed the experts and the beekeepers, and responded to the queries of the participants.
The President of PBKA Jatinder Singh Sohi, while proposing a vote of thanks, discussed the problems of beekeepers and assured them of full support in difficult times.
The programme was held under the guidance of Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication and Programme Director; and was coordinated by Dr Lavleesh Garg, Extension Scientist.
