Under the ongoing efforts, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur conducted an awareness programme for mobilization of school students to curb the practice of paddy residue burning at Govt. High Smart School, Balhadda of Dasuya block in Hoshiarpur district on 8th November, 2023.
At the outset, Smt. Nirmala Devi, Headmistress, Govt. High Smart School, Balhadda welcomed the experts from KVK and lauded the efforts of KVK for creating awareness regarding non-burning of paddy residue. She also assured full support in this noble cause.
While addressing the students, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur discussed about the harmful effects of burning of crop residue burning and also informed about the various nutrients available in the paddy residue and their importance for the soil health. He also highlighted the use of paddy straw in biogas plants, use as fuel & energy, use in mushroom cultivation and as fodder. Dr. Bons encouraged the students to act as ambassadors and play a proactive role to spread this noble message of non-burning of paddy residue in every section of the society.
Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), KVK Hoshiarpur gave a brief overview of the recommended paddy residue management technologies.
On this occasion, KVK, Hoshiarpur conducted declamation, essay writing and painting competition for the school students for sensitization regarding the harmful effects of paddy residue to the environment, soil health, human health and society. The students enthusiastically participated in the different competitions with great vigour. The winners of the various competitions were also awarded for boosting their competitive spirit.
A jagrukta rally was also organized by the school students to create awareness for shunning the practice of paddy residue burning.
