The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kapurthala, organized a camp to conduct oilseed demonstrations on canola sarson for the farmers of villages Sangra, Baupur Majid and Baupur Kadeem. Canola is an internationally accepted variety having less than 2% erucic acid in the oil. Oil rich in erucic acid is not desirable for edible purposes as it causes thickening of arteries and leads to heart problems.

At the outset, Dr Amit Salaria, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), elaborated the sowing details of oilseeds. He stressed upon the timely sowing of variety to get maximum yield. As these villages were affected by floods during July and soil was still moist, the farmers were advised to sow the nursery and transplant it when fields become suitable for transplanting.

Mrs Avneet Kaur Ahuja, Associate Professor (Home Science), shed light on nutritional benefits of using canola oil in daily diet, while Dr Amandeep Kaur, Associate Professor (Vegetable Science), enlightened the participants about benefits of sowing oilseed crops along with kitchen garden to fulfill the domestic needs.

Dr Bindu, Associate Professor (Agricultural Engineering), told about machinery required for the cultivation of oilseed crops.

Later, Dr Harinder Singh, Associate Director (Training), motivated the farmers to sow oilseeds in clusters as this would promote on-farm productivity and enhance overall marketing capacity of the cluster. This year, KVK will demonstrate oilseeds in three clusters in different blocks of Kapurthala district, namely Kapurthal, Sultanpur and Phagwara, he said.
