ICAR-CIFE, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra,
organised a 4-day special skill development training programme on “Fish Nutrition, Feed
Formulation, Feed Packaging and Marketing” for the fish feed mill manufacturers of
Maharashtra state at Mumbai during 13 to 16 October, 2025. A total of 25 beneficiaries
participated in this important training programme. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.
N.P. Sahu, Director (Acting) ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai in presence of Dr. K.N. Mohanta, Head,
Fish Nutrition, Biochemistry and Physiology Division, ICAR-CIFE and Dr. Sikendra Kumar,
Senior Scientist and Coordinator of the training programme and a training manual was
released. Dr Sahu, in his inaugural address, highlighted that feed mill owners require basic
knowledge on fish nutrition and necessary skills to operate the feed mill. He also told that
feed is the most critical and important input, constituting 60-70% of the recurring cost in
aquaculture, and to increase the fish production and achieve the target envisaged by
Maharashtra government, the state should be self-sufficient in fish feed production. In his
welcome address, Dr. Mohanta spoke that in Maharashtra a diverse range of agricultural
crops are being cultivated, the by-product of which can be used as fish feed ingredients. He
also emphasized that in this hands-on training programme more important is given in
practical classes related feed production and their quality assurance rather than the theory
classes. Dr. Sikendra Kumar, Coordinator, gave the brief outline of the training programme.
At the end of the training programme, the trainees expressed that this training programme
was very much useful for them to produce the fish feed production and thanks CIFE, Mumbai
and Department of Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra to organize this very important
training programme.
