A five-day Vocational Training Programme on “Mushroom Cultivation: A Subsidiary Occupation” was conducted from September 01-08, 2023, at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Moga. Dr Amandeep Singh Brar, Associate Director (Trg.), KVK Moga, who pioneered the programme, shared that a total of 21 farmers and farm women from different villages of districts Moga and Ferozepur attended the programme to glean informative know-how about mushroom cultivation and lucrative marketing techniques associated with this crop.
Dr Amandeep Singh Brar, Associate Director (Trg.), welcomed the participants and shared crucial information regarding the functioning of the KVK. He encouraged the farmers to adopt subsidiary occupations like mushroom production for income enhancement and livelihood improvement. Dr Brar also guided the farmers to upscale mushroom production unit gradually. He also emphasized on processing and self-marketing of their produce, focusing on the importance of agribusiness in the contemporary scenario today.
Dr Prerna Thakur, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) in the capacity of Resource Person deliberated on compost preparation, spawning, cultivation practices, disease management of button and dhingri mushroom and harvesting procedure. The farmers were also provided practical training on compost making, maintenance of sanitation in mushroom units and other aspects related to mushroom production.
Feedback was sought from the participants so as to assess the quantum of significance of the vocational training programme and further look into the needs of the farmers. Dr Prerna Thakur thanked the participating farm men and women and encouraged them to adopt mushroom cultivation in the coming season. The participants of the Training Programme expressed their gratitude to the organizers for the successful conduct of the training programme that had imparted much knowledge to them with regard to mushroom cultivation and agribusiness in this field.
