A five day vocational training course on “Goat Farming” was organized under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-I, Ludhiana at the PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur from 03.06.2024 to 07.06.2024 in which 45 farmers/rural youth/women from the districts of Sangrur and Malerkotla participated.

The training course was organized under the able guidance of Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Trg.), KVK, Sangrur who welcomed the participants and shared the mandates and working of KVK.

He highlighted the economic importance and scope of goat farming as a subsidiary occupation in agriculture and inspired the trainees to adopt goat farming for income and employment generation, besides discussing the method of record keeping.Later a preliminary test on goat farming knowledge was administered to check the awareness level of trainees.

Dr. Ajay Singh, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), KVK Mansa acted as the course coordinator and imparted detailed knowledge on goat farming, goat breeds, feeding management, goat housing and its management, vaccination and other important techniques for running a scientific and successful goat farm.

Dr. Mukesh Gupta, Veterinary Officer spoke on goat diseases and its management while Mr. Jagdish Kalra, FLC and Mr. Piyush Jindal, RMRU RBO, SBI, Sangrur provided useful information on subsidy and loan schemes of the lead bank.

Mrs. Amandeep Kaur, Fisheries Officer, Sangrur and Mrs. Napinder Kaur, Fisheries Officer, Dhuri delivered lecture on integrated fish-cum-goat farming.

Mr. Davinder Singh, Dairy Inspector and Mr. Charanjit Dhir, Dairy Field Assistant shared information about insurance scheme for animals under National Livestock Mission (NLM).

An exposure visit was organised at the farm of progressive goatery farmer Sh. Hardeep Singh of village Gaggarpur where trainees had a fruitful interaction and learned the important tips about goatery. Literature on management of goatery was also provided to the trainees.

The vocational training course concluded with a post-knowledge test to know the gain in knowledge level of trainees about goat farming. A WhatsApp group of the trainees was formed to share the latest updates on goat.
