Regional Station, Minicoy of ICAR-CIARI Port Blair, conducted a “Sensitization on responsible fisheries and Input Distribution under Schedule Tribe Component (STC)” for the welfare of tribal fishermen of Minicoy from 25th to 29th July 2022. Speaking on the inaugural occasion, the Chief Guest Dr. Shrikant R. Tapdiya, the Deputy Collector of Minicoy expressed his happiness about the technological intervention in tuna fishing, sustainable fisheries, tuna harvest, and post-harvest practices. The Guest of Honour Mr. HussainManikfan, Chairperson, Village Dweep Panchayat, Minicoy also expressed his happiness regarding ongoing activities and new initiatives at ICAR-CIARI, Regional Station, Minicoy. He also expressed his views on tuna fisheries, masmin production, and fish aggregating device for enhancing the livelihood of tribal fishermen. The scientific team comprising of Dr. Gladston Y. and Dr. Ajina S. M. interacted with the fishermen and impressed upon the responsible fishing and post-harvest management practices for tuna and the bait fishery. Shri. Shareefuddeen Hassan, Senior Technical Assistant, and Shri. Arif M.I., Senior Technician and the Coordinator of the program informed about the technical know-how and how to do the participants in ‘Mahl’ (the local language).
The scientific team visited Bada, Aoumagu, Boduathiri, New Boduathiri, Rammedu, Sadivalu, Aloodi, Funhilol, Kudehi, Fallessery, and Kendiparty villages and South Pandaram to sensitize about responsible fishing practices. In the end, he distributed the inputs to fishermen, which was attended by the officials of the Department of Fisheries Shri. Mansoor Ali and fishermen from the different clusters of villages. A total of 500 seasoned bamboo poles were distributed to the 55 Tuna Lanchi of Minicoy. A total of 61 people participated. Mrs. Ajina S.M, Convener and Co-Conveners Dr. Gladston Y., Coordinator Shri Shareefuddeen Hassan& Shri Arif M.I.,Dr.S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Nodal Officer, Lakshadweep coordinated the overall conduct of program under the Chairmanship of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
