The three-month training course on “Integrated Crop Production” culminated successfully at the Skill Development Centre, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education. In total, 48 young farmers attended the course, which provided an all-round package of the agricultural practices with emphasis on traditional and new crops as well as subsidiary occupations. Meanwhile, 78 rural women attended the monthly training camp of PAU Kisan Club (ladies wing).
Addressing the farmers, Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, stated, “Encouraging and retaining youth in agriculture is a challenge and priority. Rather than running after greener pastures, it is better for the young farmers to carry forward their agricultural legacy. Off-shores picture is gloomy and future of youngsters is at stake, whereas Punjab state’s picture looks bright with enormous opportunities available within the agriculture.” Releasing a manual for the trainees, Dr Bhullar lauded the efforts of the extension scientists in the compilation of the publication. Later, he also hailed the unflinching dedication of the home scientists in empowering the women to become economically independent by starting their ventures at small scale level.
Dr Rupinder Kaur, Associate Director (Skill Development) and Coordinator of women’s wing of the club, observed that the three-month training course had a history of motivating youths and unemployed to acquire training in agriculture, horticulture and allied enterprises, and witness financial growth through startups or agribusinesses. She also promoted women empowerment through self-sufficiency and self-reliance in agricultural occupations.
Experts Dr Shruti Jain and Dr Sehajvir Kaur gave hand-on demonstrations in the making of South Indian recipes such as upma, coconut chutney, lemon rice and appe.
Earlier, Dr Preetinder Kaur, Course Coordinator, welcomed the chief guest, experts and the trainees. Later, Mrs Kanwaljit Kaur and Mrs Kuldeep Kaur proposed a vote of thanks and informed about the skill-related training courses.
