Ri Bhoi, November 14, 2024 – In a bid to boost sustainable fisheries in Northeast India, the ICARCentral Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Kolkata Centre, in collaboration with ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ri Bhoi, conducted a three-day skill development training program on modern methods of freshwater aquaculture at KVK, Ri Bhoi, Umiam, Meghalaya during November 12-14, 2024. Twenty tribal fish farmers including 9 female fishers of Ri-bhoi, Meghalaya participated in the training. Dr. M. Islam, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Ri Bhoi, in his welcome address highlighted KVK‟s efforts to enhance rural livelihoods through scientific fish farming. Dr. Sujata Sahoo, Senior Scientist and Dr Suman Manna, Scientist from ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre briefed about the integrated fish farming, soil and water quality management in integrated fish farming etc. Hands on session on farm made feed preparation and water quality management using CIFE water testing kits were also demonstrated to the farmers. Mr. Bankitkupar Mukhim, SMS (Fisheries) at KVK Ri Bhoi outlined the importance of farm made feed & feeding strategies in aquaculture. Other important sessions like disease management, composite fish culture etc were also covered in the training. Dr. V.K. Misra, Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, lauded CIFE‟s efforts to drive fisheries advancements in the region. He noted, “Fisheries can serve as a „savings bank‟ for farmers, with returns through sustainable practices and knowledge investment. Training programs like these empower farmers to learn by doing, which is essential for real progress.” At the end of the training, manual, certificate, CIFE pH and DO kits were distributed among the farmers. Farmers showed their satisfaction and gave positive feedback about the training.
