An online training program “Advancing Understanding of Fisheries Economics for Tomorrow’s Leaders” was conducted by the Fisheries Economics, Extension and Statistics Division of ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai from June 24th to June 28th 2024 under the guidance of Dr. Ravishankar C.N., Director, CIFE, Mumbai.

Fisheries economics plays a critical role in contributing to various aspects of the economy and society. Accordingly, this training covered foundational principles to advanced concepts like micro and macro-economics, production economics, and global market and trade dynamics. Through lectures and interactive sessions, trainees gained practical insights about role of economics in shaping the sustainable management of fisheries resources.

A total of ten trainees participated and they were from College of Fishery Science, Udgir (3), Centurion University of Technology and Management, Bhubaneshwar (3), College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri (1), College of Fisheries, Kishanganj, Bihar (1) and College of Fisheries, Dholi, Bihar (2). The trainees were B.F.Sc, M.F.Sc and Ph.D in Agriculture with 3 female and 7 male participants.

During the training, Dr. Sanjay Satpal, Assistant Professor, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri delivered an invited lecture along with faculty and research scholars of FEES Division. The training covered the essentials of fisheries economics, starting with basic economic principles and costs and return concepts. Participants learned about traditional and modern methods of data collection like Remote Sensing and Satellite Imagery, KoBo Toolbox etc. Participants also got virtual hands-on experience creating their own data collection tools.

Interactive sessions, including engaging games were part of the training programme. Question answer sessions were conducted to gauge the understanding of the participants. Overall, training was a successful and received very good feedback from the participants. The training was coordinated by Dr. Arpita Sharma, Dr. Swadesh Prakash, Dr. Vinod K Yadav and Dr. Ankush Kamble.
