The Annual Rabi Oilseeds Group Meet for Safflower and Linseed 2024 was jointly organized by the Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU) and the Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR) at the Water Technology Center Auditorium on the 28th and 29th of October, 2024. The event saw participation from over 150 scientists hailing from various states, making it a significant gathering for advancements in oilseed research and cultivation strategies.

The meeting commenced with introductory remarks by Dr. Jella Sathyanarayana (Dean of Agriculture at PJTAU), who highlighted the university’s latest activities in developing pest- and disease-resistant varieties of safflower and linseed. He emphasized the importance of creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for drone spraying in crop protection, a step seen as pivotal for precision agriculture in oilseed farming. Dr. Sathyanarayana underscored PJTAU’s commitment to innovation, aiming to enhance productivity and sustainability in oilseed production.

The session was chaired by Dr. T.R. Sharma, (ICAR-DDG, Crop Sciences-New Delhi). In his address, provided insights into the current status of oilseed exports and imports, stressing the need for a stronger national mission to support the oilseed sector. He noted the importance of safflower and linseed not only in domestic markets but also for their potential in international trade. Dr. Sharma called for collaborative efforts to ensure self-sufficiency in oilseeds, which would lessen India’s dependence on imports and boost rural economies. Dr. Sanjeev Gupta (ICAR-ADG, Oilseeds & Pulses- New Delhi), shared his thoughts on expanding oilseed cultivation, especially for safflower and linseed.

He emphasized that these crops could be instrumental in diversifying the rabi cropping systems, particularly in semi-arid regions. He outlined various strategies, including improved cultivation practices and modern agronomic techniques, to maximize yields and support farmers in transitioning to these high-value crops. A comprehensive presentation was given by Dr. R.K. Mathur (Director of IIOR), who outlined the research efforts of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) Centers on safflower and linseed. Dr. Mathur presented data on varietal development, pest and disease management, and agronomic trials conducted across different regions. He showcased how these centers are addressing regional challenges to improve oilseed productivity and quality, with a focus on sustainability and climate resilience. In recognition of the vital role that farmers play in promoting oilseed crops, the meet included a felicitation ceremony for innovative safflower and linseed farmers who have shown leadership in adopting and advocating for improved practices. These farmers were commended for their role in advancing the national mission on oilseeds and inspiring their communities. The event concluded with valedictory remarks from Dr. C. Sudhakar (Principal Scientist and Organizing Secretary from Tandur) highlighted the importance of translating research into practical applications and encouraged continued collaboration among scientists, farmers, and policy-makers. He expressed optimism about the future of oilseed crops, particularly as a means to ensure food and nutritional security while contributing to the nation’s agricultural economy. The Annual Rabi Oilseeds Group Meet served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, fostering advancements in safflower and linseed research and reinforcing the commitment to enhance oilseed cultivation in India. The discussions and outcomes from the event are expected to guide future research, policy, and practical applications to support the growth of these essential crops.
