armers’ mobilization camp regarding crop residue management was organized by the students of final year B.Sc Agriculture (Hons) of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) at Lalton Khurd village. The camp was held in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare under Rural Awareness Work Experience Program (RAWE). About 70 farmers participated in the camp.

During the camp, Dr Kuldeep Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Extension Education, said that today the major challenge was to sustain agriculture production, while conserving the natural resources at the same time. He said that the department was continuously putting efforts to create awareness among masses through the organization of various extension activities in the field.

While welcoming farmers, Dr Lakhwinder Kaur, Extension Scientist, motivated the farmers to shun paddy straw burning and adopt PAU recommended machinery for sowing of wheat crop. She said that engaging school students in these activities provided them an additional opportunity to convey this message to their elder family members in a better way. During the programme, school students were asked to prepare charts, posters, deliver lectures, recite poems on social issues, etc. Prizes were given to school students for their efforts, she added.

Dr Dara Singh, Agriculture Officer, motivated the farmers to adopt water management strategies at farm and household level. He also advised farmers to avoid excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides.

Dr Sandeep Singh, Agriculture Engineer Officer, told about in-situ and ex-situ management of paddy straw. He also dwelt upon subsidiary occupations which should become an integral part of a farm family.

Dr Parkash Singh, Agriculture Officer, acquainted the farmers with various ongoing subsidy schemes of the department and urged them to reap maximum benefit from these schemes.

The RAWE students viz. Harbhajan Singh, Lakshay, Manjot Kaur and Sehajpreet Kaur also delivered lectures during the camp. The farmers interacted with the scientists. Sardar Parminder Singh shared his journey of success of crop residue management. Sarpanch of village Sardar Gurjagdeep Singh proposed a vote of thanks. At this event, vegetable kits, oilseed kits and PAU literature were also distributed.
