Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur, conducted a vocational training programme on the ‘Scope of agro-processing complexes for enhancing farmers’ income by value addition’ under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
During the inaugural session, Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, welcomed the participants and exhorted the trainees to establish agro-processing centers at rural sites to revive their economies and employment opportunities through processing and value addition of produce, which can curtail the migration of rural youth to urban areas.
In this training, Dr Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering) at KVK Hoshiarpur, explained the importance of agro-processing industries in the district, the concept of agro-industrial complexes, the processing of pulses, and the processing of turmeric at a small-scale level.
Trainees participated in exposure visits to various facilities, including an agro-processing complex in Saido Patti, the Farm Produce Promotion Society (FAPRO) in village Ghugial near Bhunga, and a modern jaggery processing plant in Dhadha Kalan. During these visits, they gained insights into machinery used in processing turmeric, honey, and solar-based drying units.
