PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Faridkot, under the guidance of Dr Amandeep Singh Brar, Associate Director (Training), and the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana, organized an awareness camp on Direct-Seeded Rice (DSR) at village Pakhi Kalan. The event, attended by 27 progressive farmers, aimed to promote the adoption of DSR technology for sustainable farming.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Professor of Agricultural Engineering, motivated farmers to adopt DSR technology, highlighting the benefits of sowing with the Lucky seed drill and other machinery. He emphasized the importance of water conservation through DSR.
Dr. Pawitar Singh, Assistant Professor of Soil Science, discussed the significance of soil testing and the judicious use of fertilizers. He encouraged farmers to incorporate crop residues, organic manures, and green manures into the soil to maintain long-term soil productivity and health.
Dr. Fatehjeet Singh, District Extension Specialist (Agronomy) at PAU-FASC, Faridkot, provided valuable insights on weed management in DSR. He encouraged farmers to follow the recommended DSR practices for better grain yield. Technical literature on DSR was distributed among the participants.
Kuljeet Singh, a progressive farmer from the village who has successfully adopted DSR on 12 acres for the past five years, shared his positive experiences. He noted that the tar wattar technique of DSR has significantly reduced water consumption, labour requirements, and input costs. Inspired by his success, other farmers in the village have begun using the tar wattar technique on a combined area of 51 acres this year.
