A 7-day vocational training course on “Pig Rearing” was organized at KVK, Amritsar from 21.10.2024 to 29.10.2024 in collaboration with Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-Attari, Zone-1, Ludhiana, in which 30 farmer veterans and rural youth from Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Jalandhar districts participated. This training course was conducted under the able guidance of Dr. Bikramjit Singh, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Amritsar.
On the first day, Dr. Bikramjit Singh warmly welcomed the participating trainees and briefed them about the functioning of KVK. He highlighted the importance of pig rearing as a subsidiary occupation in agriculture and motivated the trainees to adopt pig rearing as a means of generating income and employment. He also appealed to the farmers to make the most of the services being provided by the KVK.
Dr. Kanwarpal Singh Dhillon, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), KVK, Amritsar worked as the course coordinator and gave detailed information on various topics including pig breeds, dietary requirements, housing arrangements, marketing of pigs, deworming of pigs, vaccination programme and pig diseases and their prevention to run a successful scientific pig farm at home or commercial level. The trainees were also made aware about the economics of pig farming. Apart from this, a demonstration on “Tag on ears of pigs for identification” was also conducted during the training course.
Dr. Narinderpal Singh, District Extension Specialist, FASC, Amritsar provided useful information on the method of record keeping on pig farms.
Dr. Puneet Singh, Veterinary Officer, Amritsar shared information about the facilities provided by the Animal Husbandry Department and the schemes available for pig farmers like KCC and NLM.
Smt. Supriya Kamboj, Fisheries Officer, Amritsar shared information about the facilities provided by the Fisheries Department, the schemes available and the combined fish and pig farming.
Mr. Manjit Singh, DDM, NABARD, Amritsar provided useful information about the government funded schemes and subsidies for the animal farmers.
S. Bikramjit Singh Waraich, President, Pig Farmer Welfare Association, Amritsar shared his experience with the trainees about the basic difficulties faced in pig farming and cleared their doubts.
Three educational visits were conducted to the pig farms of progressive pig farmers. S. Bikramjit Singh Waraich of village Fatehgarh Shukerchak, S. Harpal Singh and S. Sukhpal Singh Gill of village Bal Kalan where the trainees directly interacted and gained valuable insights.
A ‘Pre-knowledge test’ was conducted to check the knowledge level of the trainees on pig farming and the vocational training programme concluded with a ‘Post Training Knowledge Test’ to check the growth in the knowledge level of the trainees. A WhatsApp group was also created to share the latest information on pig and animal husbandry.
During the closing ceremony, Dr. Kanwarpal Singh Dhillon thanked all the participants and motivated them to take this new venture to new heights in the future. The trainees were also provided with books on pigs.
