The PAU-Farm Advisory Service Centre (FASC) in Ropar organized two awareness camps in Musapur and Aggampur villages, focusing on maize cultivation and insect pest management. Experts, including Dr Raminder Singh Ghuman and Dr Navneet Kaur Dhaliwal from FASC Ropar and Dr Mahesh Kumar and Dr Jwala Jindal from PAU, Ludhiana, delivered insightful lectures.
Dr. Ghuman highlighted the approved maize hybrids, composite varieties, and the recommended cultivation practices. Dr. Kumar stressed the importance of the correct dosage and timing of fertilizer and irrigation application, providing farmers with crucial information for achieving high-quality produce. Dr. Jindal provided detailed information on harmful insect pests, particularly the fall armyworm, covering their identification and effective management.
During the event, herbicides and insecticides were distributed free of cost to the attending farmers. Officials from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare discussed various welfare schemes available to farmers. Emphasizing the need for crop diversification, experts advocated for maize as a sustainable alternative to the water-intensive paddy crop. The main objective of the camps was to encourage the revival of maize cultivation to reduce the area under paddy cultivation. Additionally, the experts addressed farmers’ queries and visited local maize fields, providing practical insights that farmers can immediately apply to their fields.
