To promote the wide adoption of the TAR WATTAR RICE technique among farmers, the Punjab Agricultural University’s Farm Advisory Service Centre (PAU-FASC) in Kapurthala organized a skill development camp on July 10, 2024, at Khera Bet village. Approximately 40 farmers attended the camp to learn the finer nuances of Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) planting through the TAR WATTAR RICE technique.

Dr Pardeep Kumar, Senior Extension Scientist (Agronomy) and in charge of the camp elaborated on the differences, crop management practices, and advantages of the TAR WATTAR RICE technique compared to traditional dry DSR and wet field capacity sown methods. He presented a grim picture of the constantly falling groundwater table in Punjab, particularly due to intensive cropping rotations such as potato/carrot/cauliflower/field peas-spring maize-short duration rice/hybrid rice by some farmers in the Doaba belt, despite warnings from agricultural experts.

Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of following PAU’s recommended Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for water and power saving and the judicious use of agricultural inputs to reduce production costs and minimize the heavy energy budget. The participating farmers were taken on a field visit to observe the demonstration of the TAR WATTAR RICE technique in the fields of village Sarpanch Mr. Jaswinder Singh, where they were impressed with the crop stand.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the village Sarpanch.
