The Soil and Water Engineering Club, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated the World Soil Day (WSD) under the theme “Soil and Water: A Source of Life.”

The chief guest Dr GPS Sodhi, Director of Extension Education, emphasized the need for soil and water testing, and the use of fertilizers based on soil testing. Stating that soil testing was a protective tool against irrational use of nutrients, he advocated the sustainable management of soil resources.

Dr Manjeet Singh, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, PAU, who was the guest of honour, highlighted the importance of precision farming and use of advanced machines like Strip-Till Drill, Super Seeder, Shredding and Spreading Mulch for saving water resources and improving soil health.

Dr KG Singh, Former Head, Soil and Water Engineering, PAU, shed light on the importance of modern techniques that were helpful for maintaining soil health, plant health, and societal health, necessary for the well-being of the Earth’s planet to bring food security.

Sh Mahinder Singh Dosanjh, a progressive farmer; member of the Research an Extension Council; and Fruit and Vegetable Committee, PAU, gave a clarion call to the farmers to shun the practice of paddy residue burning, which was deteriorating the soil fertility, human health, and the environment.

Dr JP Singh, Professor and Head (Incharge), Department of Soil and Water Engineering, PAU, in his welcome address, highlighted the importance of healthy soil on earth and said that soil was a legacy that needed to be conserved for future generations.

Dr Nilesh Biwalkar, Professor of Soil and Water Engineering, moderated the celebration of World Soil Day 2023.

Dr Samanpreet Kaur, Principal Scientist, Soil and Water Engineering, proposed a vote of thanks.
