The Department of Food and Nutrition, College of Community Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, concluded a five-day specialized training course on 26.07.2024 Bakery and Confectionery. Organized under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education, the course aimed to empower women by enhancing their culinary skills in baking. The training attracted 34 participants, including professionals, students, and homemakers from diverse backgrounds.

Throughout the training, participants received hands-on experience in baking, including cake baking and decoration, bread and muffin making, and preparing sweet and savoury biscuits, multigrain cookies, doughnuts, chocolates, puddings, and more. They were introduced to a wide range of ingredients, tools, and equipment commonly used in bakeries and taught essential techniques for creating delicious treats. Emphasis was also placed on promoting hygiene and safety practices in the kitchen.

During the concluding session, Dr. M.S. Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, commended the department’s efforts in providing valuable insights into baking techniques. He encouraged participants to apply their newly acquired skills in personal and professional settings, emphasizing the potential for self-reliance. Dr. Kiran Bains, Dean of the College of Community Science, highlighted that starting a small-scale bakery unit requires minimal investment and can be profitable for beginners.

Dr. Kiran Grover, Head of the Department of Food and Nutrition, noted the increasing demand for value-added, healthy, and functional bakery products. She emphasized that specialized bakery courses offer significant opportunities for income generation, instilling a sense of hope and optimism in the audience. The bakery business, she pointed out, is a year-round venture compared to seasonal employment. Dr. Grover also expressed the department’s commitment to continuing such skill-enhancing initiatives in the future.

The training course was well-received by all participants, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from esteemed experts and enhance their baking and confectionery skills.
