As a step towards revolutionizing agriculture and enhancing the accessibility of advanced agricultural solutions for the farming community, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana has taken a significant stride by entering into a partnership with the Indian Farm Forestry Development Cooperative Ltd (IFFDC Ltd) Punjab, on October 27, 2023, paving way for commercial seed production of the highly promising chilli hybrid, CH-27.
The Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research, PAU, and Mr K.S. Sandhu, Chief Project Manager of IFFDC Punjab, on behalf of their respective organizations.
Dr Pushpinder Pal Singh Pannu, Additional Director of Research (NR&PHM), and Dr Tarsem Singh Dhillon, Head of the Department of Vegetable Science, congratulated Dr. Salesh Jindal, Senior Vegetable Breeder from the Department of Vegetable Science, for his instrumental role in the successful commercialization of the CH-27 chilli hybrid.
Dr Jindal provided insights into the distinctive features of CH-27, describing it as a high-yielding hybrid with remarkable resistance to leaf curl virus, fruit rot, and root-knot nematodes. These plants exhibit a sprawling growth pattern and bear fruits consistently over an extended period. A light green hue characterizes the fruits and possesses medium pungency, making them ideal for powder production and processing. CH-27 has garnered popularity among growers owing to its adaptability throughout the country.
Dr Khushdeep Dharni, Associate Director of the Technology Marketing and IPR Cell at PAU, highlighted the university’s dedicated efforts in promoting the commercialization of vegetable hybrids. He emphasized the overwhelmingly positive response from various stakeholders regarding the cutting-edge technologies developed by PAU Ludhiana.
