Meeting with office bearers of Kanpur Pulse Millers Association was organized at ICAR-Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur on 07/05/2024. The meeting was chaired by Dr. K. Guite, Economic Advisor, Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, GOI, New Delhi. Dr. Guite informed the millers about the initiatives taken by GoI to promote production, procurement and distribution of pulses, and showed his concern about variability is availability of dehusked splits, i.e., dal.

Director ICAR-IIPR, Kanpur, Dr. G.P. Dixit, updated the millers about the reason for shifted preference of farmers towards wheat and paddy due to water availability and assured crops. He also informed them about the new initiatives of IIPR in area of varietal improvement.

President of Kanpur Pulse Millers Association, Mr. Mithilesh Gupta expressed about the problems faced by the millers. Mainly it is poor availability of raw pulse grains and decreasing pulses production in Uttar Pradesh. Procuring grains from other states increases the cost of milling. Other members of the associations also raised their concern about losses in pulse milling and requested policy interventions to make pulse milling industry sustainable, which is possible through motivating farmers to grow pulses. About 10 millers participated in the meeting.

Dr. Prasoon Verma, Senior Scientist (ASPE) educated the millers about edible usage of pulses milling byproduct. Dr. Narendra Kumar, Head-Division of Crop Production coordinated the programme.
