ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Regional Centre, Bangalore conducted a mass awareness program on “Significance of sustainable fishing” at Kabini reservoir in Mysore district, Karnataka on 22 October 2024 under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. The program was conducted under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). One FRP boat and an OBM engine was handed over to the Girijanara Meenugarara Sahakara Sangha with 304 Scheduled Tribe members at Kabini. The program was attended by 50 fishers of Mysore district.

Dr. Vijaykumar M. E., Technical Officer, ICAR-CIFRI welcomed the gathering. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Head, Regional Centre, presented the introductory remarks and shared her insights on the role of reservoir fisheries in sustaining the livelihood of inland fishers. Shri Srinivas K N, Deputy Director, Shri Mahadeva, Deputy Director, Shri Chandan C., Deputy Director and Mr. Shivaranjan H. U., Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Karnataka interacted with the participants.

Shri. Kavera, President of Girijana Meenugarara Sahakara Sangha, Kabini spoke on the occasion and thanked ICAR-CIFRI for choosing the society under TSP. Dr. Sibina Mol S., Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI spoke on the importance of responsible fishing and Dr. Sonalika Sahoo, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI highlighted the importance of clean water for sustainable fisheries. The program was coordinated by Dr. Sibina Mol S. and Dr. Sonalika Sahoo.
