Under the ongoing efforts under Praali Parbandhan Chetna Yatra, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur conducted an awareness programme for mobilization of college students to curb the practice of paddy residue burning at Rayat Bahra Institute of Engineering and Nanotechnology, Hoshiarpur on 20th October, 2023.
At the outset, Dr. Jyotsana, Director Principal, Rayat Bahra Institute of Engineering and Nanotechnology, Hoshiarpur, welcomed the experts from KVK and lauded the efforts of KVK for creating awareness regarding non burning of paddy residue.
While addressing the students, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur discussed about the harmful effects of burning of crop residue burning and also informed about the various nutrients available in the paddy residue and their importance for the soil health. He gave a brief overview of the recommended paddy residue management technologies and also highlighted the use of paddy straw in biogas plants, use as fuel & energy, use in mushroom cultivation and as fodder. Dr. Bons encouraged the students to participate in various competitions that were to be organized regarding paddy residue management campaign and also to act as ambassadors to spread this noble message of non burning of paddy residue in every section of the society.
On this occasion, KVK Hoshiarpur conducted declamation, essay writing and painting competition for the school students for sensitization regarding the harmful effects of paddy residue to the environment, soil health, human health and society. The students enthusiastically participated in the different competitions with great vigour. The winners of the various competitions were also awarded for boosting their competitive spirit by the guests including Dr. Chander Mohan, Campus Director, Rayat Bahra Group of Institutes, Hoshiarpur, who also assured full support in this noble cause.
A jagrukta rally was also organized by the college students to create awareness for shunning the practice of paddy residue burning.
The competitions were arranged under the guidance of Dr. Prabhjot Kaur, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), Ms. Sunita, Programme Assistant (Lab. Technician) and the staff of Rayat Bahra Institute of Engineering and Nanotechnology, Hoshiarpur, Ms. Tarnpreet Kaur and Ms. Pooja Khullar.
