Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has been advocating non-burning of paddy residue and popularization of paddy straw management techniques for avoiding environmental degradation by launching regular campaigns. To make the farmers aware about the different paddy residue management technologies, the district level extension agency of PAU – Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur, conducted demonstrations and established learning platforms for in-situ management of paddy residue for showcasing different technologies for direct sowing of wheat in paddy residue at the farm of KVK associated progressive farmer, Sh. Taranjit Singh of village Bugra of block Mahilpur on November 15, 2023.
Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, urged the farmers to shun residue burning for safeguarding the environment. He shared that as per precedence set in previous years, this year too, KVK Hoshiarpur, is organizing a campaign for managing paddy residue through awareness camps, trainings, demonstrations, hoardings, wall paintings and literature distribution. Dr Bons said that KVK Hoshiarpur is also providing paddy residue machinery for use by the farmers of the area, at nominal charges.
Dr Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering) discussed different in-situ paddy residue management technologies and conducted various method demonstrations on Surface Seeding of wheat, PAU Smart Seeder, Happy Seeder, Super Seeder, Zero Till Drill and Incorporation of paddy residue with Rotavator.
Er. Lovely, Assistant Agriculture Engineer, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Hoshiarpur, informed the gathering about subsidy being provided for different in-situ paddy residue management farm machineries. He also informed that custom hiring centres on paddy residue machinery have been formed in the blocks. He further laid stress on the need of custom hiring and cooperative basis for proper utilization of paddy residue machineries.
Sh. Taranjit Singh expressed satisfaction with all the in-situ paddy residue management machinery. He possesses two Super SMS combines, Mulcher, MB plough, Super Seeder and also provides customer hiring services for the same.
